New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights Statement on House Vote to Kill Online Voter Registration
Concord, NH — Today, the New Hampshire House voted Inexpedient to Legislate on House Bill 521. HB521 would create an Online Voter Registration system for New Hampshire, allowing voters to register to vote or update their voter registration information using their New Hampshire issued license or ID. This system would securely connect to the DMV to verify voters’ identity, age, domicile, and citizenship before sending their registration to local election officials – creating a faster, more accessible, and more secure registration option for voters.
McKenzie Taylor, Director of the New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights, released the following statement:
“We are deeply disappointed that just one session after passing the most regressive voter registration scheme in the country and days after over 40 voters were turned away from registering on town meeting day, anti-voting rights politicians in Concord once again are more interested in keeping New Hampshire one of the most difficult places in the country to register to vote rather than supporting common sense upgrades that improve New Hampshire elections. HB521 would have helped address the long registration lines voters experienced in November, while also making it easier for voters to provide all of the documentation needed to register under new requirements in a more secure and accessible way.”
“New Hampshire is far overdue to join the 42 other states and Washington DC in adopting online voter registration, and voters deserve legislators who will prioritize creating a voter registration system that brings our state into the 21st century.”
