New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights Statement on Secretary Scanlan’s Election

CONCORD, NH — Today, Secretary of State David Scanlan was re-elected to another two year term. New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights Director Mckenzie Taylor released the following statement:

“We congratulate Secretary of State Scanlan for his re-election as Secretary of State today.

“In the last three years under Secretary of State Scanlan’s leadership, we have seen some of the most restrictive election laws ever implemented in the state of New Hampshire. From SB418, which made same-day registration more complicated and burdensome, to HB1569 which weakened our same-day registration system, these bills were passed without comment from Secretary Scanlan or with outright support.

“This year, New Hampshire saw near record turnout, but with that turnout came long lines–sometimes up to two hours to register to vote, which highlighted the urgent need for New Hampshire’s election systems to adapt and become more efficient. Proactive reforms like online voter registration and expanded use and funds for electronic poll books are non-partisan reforms that could help to ensure voters can more easily register before election day or move through lines more quickly on election day.

“We look forward to working with the legislature and with Secretary Scanlan to ensure that Granite Staters can cast a ballot on Election Day with the expectation that the process is safe, secure, accurate, and efficient.”
